One community leader from Blackpool claims that people on her estate are too scared to put on their heating due to the high costs associated with it.

Gwen King, chairman of the Queens Park Residents' Association, has told the Blackpool Gazette that people just "sit there in the cold" as they are afraid to switch their heating on as they cannot afford the high costs of energy.

Speaking on the back of ScottishPower's recent announcement that it was cutting gas prices on one of its tariffs by ten per cent, Ms King said that amount was "pretty pathetic", adding that "15 per cent across the board would have been a much better option".

Ms King issued a warning to the big energy companies, telling the newspaper: "We're seeing a return to Victorian times where people are freezing to near death.

"But why should one energy company have the right to cut its tariff while the others don't?"

Ed Monk, household utilities specialist for Thisismoney.co.uk, recently told the Daily Mail that consumers should definitely search for a better energy deal with another supplier.
