A leading UK energy supplier has claimed that it has the support of local people for its proposed changes to its Kingsnorth site.

E.ON has claimed that new research by Ipsos Mori has shown that two-thirds of people living near the area are behind plans to develop a cleaner coal-fired power station.

It is believed that the development would be around 20 per cent more efficient than the existing technology on-site.

Kingsnorth plant manager Alan Sanderson said it was "certainly gratifying" that the local community supported the plans.

He added: "Clearly we as a company are also very concerned about climate change which is one of the reasons why we're closing the existing Kingsnorth plant by the end of 2015 and planning to build a much more efficient station."

E.ON recently announced that it is holding two events to showcase its plans for a proposed windfarm in County Durham.

Two exhibitions will take place next week in Sedgefield and Stillington.
