npower's renewables division has been given the go-ahead to operate a major windfarm in Northumberland.

The energy supplier is set to build and operate the new site at Middlemoor near Alnwick, with the completed development expected to meet the needs of over 27,000 homes.

Proposals for the windfarm were originally announced four years ago, while the project was given the green light after a three-week inquiry.

Managing director of npower renewables, Paul Cowling, said: "We are delighted that John Hutton and Malcolm Wicks have decided that we can construct and operate the Middlemoor windfarm.

"Of course, we will continue to work with local communities, and are committed to substantial efforts to protect and where possible enhance the environment."

The go-ahead of the windfarm has come after the company's hydroelectric scheme at Romney Weir was recently approved by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Committee.

Construction work on the development is set to begin at the start of next year.
