Sydney Opera House has been named in a new poll as the top modern wonder of the world.

The Australian landmark beat the likes of the Eiffel Tower, as well as Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer Statue, in the survey by Halifax Travel Insurance.

Stonehenge, Giant's Causeway and Big Ben were the named as the UK's most interesting landmarks, along with Edinburgh Castle, Ben Nevis and The Eden Project.

Discussing the findings, Halifax Travel Insurance spokesperson Vicky Watson said: "Whether people are travelling to foreign shores or staying within the UK, we would urge people to consider whether their chosen travel insurance is adequate for their particular trip, and not just buy on price alone.

She added that it could cost up to £45,000 for a person without cover to be repatriated after an accident in the US.

Previous research by Halifax Travel Insurance found that Spain is the place where UK holidaymakers are most likely to fall ill.
