A new study by E.ON has revealed what kind of businesses that the greenest employees in the UK tend to work for.

The research by the energy supplier found that those who work for smaller companies are more likely to make moves to turn off electrical equipment and be energy efficient than people employed by larger firms.

BusinessGreen reports that those working at bigger businesses feel that the need to formalise processes is one issue that is holding them back from being eco-friendly.

E.ON's commercial director, Jim Macdonald, told the website that companies need to reduce the burden of red tape if they want staff to be greener.

"Our research shows that, it's a feeling of needing to ask permission to make positive changes which prevents workers from taking the necessary steps," he added.

The release of the study has come after E.ON confirmed the date that it is to demolish the Tinsley cooling towers in Sheffield.

A controlled explosion will be used to bring down the landmark on August 24th.
