Holidaymakers who are planning to have a break in the UK should check their luggage is covered by an insurance policy, according to Legal & General.

The company has released figures claiming that the overall value of luggage for a family of four going away either in this country or abroad is over £3,000.

It was also found that a single holdall including the belongings of one person could be over £1,300.

Elaine Parkes, head of technical services at Legal & General's insurance business, said it is "surprising" how the cost of luggage can add up.

She added: "Holidaymakers should check that they have appropriate cover in place for both their holiday plans and their personal belongings before travelling."

Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance, recently stated that specialist wedding cover would also be beneficial for those who are planning to tie the knot abroad.

She added that the policies should be a "mandatory aspect" of preparations for the big day.
