British Gas has announced a new online payment service, according to a source.

The "Click Pay As You Go" scheme offers customers reduced rates for their energy, reports callcentre.co.uk.

Lowering gas and electricity bills during the current economic climate is said to be the main reason behind the service, which was recently called for by consumer group Energywatch, the website adds.

It is claimed the tariff will reduce the average yearly energy bill from £1,143 to £1,073, the source states.

Meanwhile, consumers in Bury are being offered free advice on how to lower the amount they spend on gas, reports the Bury Times.

British Gas is giving tips to residents as part of its new "Energy Surgeries" programme, the newspaper adds.

The cost-cutting strategies come shortly after it was claimed the era of "cheap energy is over".

John Hutton, UK business secretary, made the claim in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
