Energy suppliers in the UK do not make decisions to increase the cost of gas and electricity lightly, according to the chief executive of the Energy Retail Association.

Dr Garry Felgate said that the competitive nature of the market meant it was not easy for companies to introduce such changes.

The expert also claimed that the "era of cheap energy" in the UK is now over, which means support must be provided to the most vulnerable consumers.

He explained: "It is important to ensure that those who are struggling with their bills receive all the help available to them.

"If you think you might have difficulty paying your bills this winter, get in touch with your energy company before the cold weather to find out what help may be available to you."

Recent research by Saga Home Insurance claimed that 46 per cent of people believe that the government is to blame for the rising cost of gas and electricity in the UK.
