EDF Energy has agreed to trial a new eco-friendly vehicle designed by leading car manufacturer Toyota.
The gas and electricity supplier is to test the car firm's new plug-in hybrid vehicle, which is believed to be the first of its kind to be introduced to the UK.
EDF is planning to use car as part of its company fleet and is expected to keep in regular touch with Toyota to report on the day-to-day use of the technology.
The car manufacturer is then expected to use the feeback to continue its development of the systems.
Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive of EDF Energy, said the firm was "delighted" to be involved.
"He added: "Incorporating this vehicle into our fleet complements our work in developing electric charging posts for vehicles in the UK and in France."
At the end of July, EDF Energy announced that it was to increase the cost of its gas and electricity by 22 per cent and 17 per cent respectively.
