Those wanting to take out a mortgage should use a whole-of-market broker to find them the best deal, despite the credit crunch, it has been claimed.

Donna Werbner, writing for Fool.co.uk, explained that a broker will have the time to research every single deal available for potential borrower and some lenders offer special deals to consumers through intermediaries.

Brokers can also offer potential borrowers advice, meaning that those taking out a mortgage can benefit from guidance on what issues to prioritise - for example flexibility, payment size - and what is less important, she continued.

They are also able to help out with the application process, especially when deals are announced and then withdrawn within days because of a high take-up rate, according to Fool.co.uk.

"Your broker is always on your side, battling with lenders on your behalf," Ms Werbner added.

Earlier in the month, the Financial Services Authority shut down a mortgage broker as part of an ongoing campaign to protect consumers.
