The price of electricity for domestic customers rose by 7.5 per cent in the second quarter of 2008 compared to 12 months earlier, according to new figures.
Research from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) found the cost of gas also grew by 4.9 per cent over the same period.
Provisional statistics also revealed that the average standard credit bill grew by £21 compared to last year, while the average direct debit bill rose by £25 to just over £370.
It was also found that 13.5 million domestic electricity customers are not with their home supplier anymore, while 12.1 million gas users are in the same position.
The publication of the government's figures has come after Westminster praised EDF's move to acquire British Energy.
In a statement, it claimed that the energy supplier's planned acquisition could lower the UK's reliance on imported fuel, which suggested that it may also lead to a fall in the cost of gas and electricity for consumers.
