Car insurance premiums for young male drivers are continuing to rise, according to new research.
The study by AA Insurance found that the gap between the cost of cover for young men and women has grown by just under 60 per cent in the past five years.
According to the company, the number of accidents involved young drivers is affecting the cost with research from the Department of Transport last year highlighting that young men accounted for a third of people killed in accidents.
Simon Douglas of AA said: "Insurance premiums are based on claims experience and the unfortunate facts are that men aged under 21 are ten times more likely to have an accident than men aged 35 or more.
"Regardless of gender, premiums quickly fall for drivers who remain accident blame-free and don't collect driving offences."
Earlier this month, research published by Tesco Car Insurance warned motorists that modifying their vehicles could lead to insurance policies becoming void.
