Next week is national Energy Saving Week, a campaign designed to encourage households reduce their carbon emissions and save money on gas and electricity bills.
Gas prices have risen by almost 50 per cent in the last year, with electricity costs not far behind with a rise of just over 30 per cent, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released this week.
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that families could save up to £270 a year by adopting simple measures such as switching lights off and not leaving appliances on standby.
Households are being offered free energy checks to see how they can cut down on costs and be environmentally friendly.
Gas and electricity prices are unlikely to come down in the near future, according to the Press Association.
The news provider reported that gas for delivery in the first quarter of next year is trading for 80p a therm, up two-thirds from last year meaning that consumers will be paying high prices for the foreseeable time.
