Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) could help businesses save thousands of pounds, according to Royal Sun Alliance (RSA).

It has been mandatory for all buildings being constructed, sold or rented to hold an EPC since the beginning of this month in a scheme designed to rate and improve the energy efficiency of properties.

The RSA has cited examples of its own clients, calculating that one company is expected to save £135,000 in five years after an initial investment of £32,000 to modify its air conditioning system.

Another business is tipped to save £21,000 in five years after an initial payment of £750.

Energy management leader at RSA Alex Matthias said: "An an EPC provider and keen campaigner for reducing energy use, we want businesses to understand that minor changes to the property's heating and ventilation systems could not only save them thousands but could also play a significant part in reducing the UK's carbon emissions."

Meanwhile, EPCs on homes up for sale have been extended from 12 months to three years, reducing costs for builders and homeowners, according to contractjournal.com.

The House of Commons has extended EPC validity on the grounds of administrative convenience.
