According to research, 20 per cent of people still do not lock their doors and windows at night, 13 per cent leave windows open when they are out, and over a quarter admit they do not think about home security at all.

The survey from Norwich Union is joined by figures showing that burglary claims increase by five per cent after the clocks go back, and the average cost of being burgled is more than £1,000.

A partnership with Norfolk police has resulted in the Safer Street campaign, which has seen a row of terraced houses in Norwich being given basic security advice to combat burglaries.

Simon Warsop, director of home pricing at Norwich Union, said: "Of course insurance is there to help when you are unfortunate enough to become a victim of crime.

"But no one wants to be burgled in the first place and the more we can all do to help protect our homes and our belongings the better."

Meanwhile, research from Direct Line has shown that one in ten homes has been targeted by burglars in the last five years.

This is equivalent to 2.4 million homes across the UK being burgled or suffering a burglary attempt.
