Homeowners should check their home insurance covers personal liability claims before November 5th, according to a leading website.

esure has warned that with an estimated 2.8 million Brits planning to hold a Bonfire Night party at home, people ensure their insurance is current for "if the worst happens".

According to the site, deep problems can be caused if injury or accident occurs, particularly if the home insurance premium has inadequate personal liability cover, or if there is no insurance at all.

Legally, the organiser of an event, even if it is a homeowner with friends around, needs to ensure they "have not overlooked their duty of care", according to esure.

Mike Pickard, esure's head of risk and underwriting, said "risks are magnified" on Bonfire Night.

"If the organiser has failed to read instructions, ignored recommended 'setting off' distances or lit fireworks while inebriated, a claim could easily ensue - especially given the growing public awareness of the potential for litigation," he added.

Tesco Home Insurance recently warned that vandalism of malicious acts can lead to an increase in home insurance claims over Halloween.
