Many couples are now choosing to have 'mini-moons', as financial pressures mean traditional honeymoons are being delayed, according to esure.

The insurer said its research showed that one-third of respondents chose to go on a short trip after getting married and 22 per cent said they had delayed their honeymoons by weeks or even months to save up.

Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, said: "It's interesting to see how trends have changed over the years.

"With the rise in the number of people cohabiting before they get married nowadays, there are clearly a lot of newlyweds wanting to use their honeymoon as the ultimate break away before they can truly settle down to married life."

It was also found that a quarter said their honeymoon was more important than the actual wedding day.

Meanwhile, travelmole.com reports that it has been predicted that second holidays will suffer in the credit crunch.

John Kent, founder of youtravel.com has said that 40 per cent of consumers would forgo a second holiday this year to save money.
