Millions of car insurance customers could be forced to pay out for their own bad habits, according to a new study.
A study by Tesco Car Warranty found that 14 per cent of drivers in the UK admit to driving in the wrong gear and a third admits to 'riding the clutch'.
With a new clutch costing an average of £800, these habits could result in motorists facing large costs caused by their own bad driving.
The research also found that 78 per cent of motorists do not regularly maintain their cars.
Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco Personal Finance, said faulty driving and maintenance habits "can lead directly" to vehicle wear and tear.
"In the current economic climate, it's more important than ever for drivers to manage their motoring costs to ward off any unexpected bills," he added.
A recent study by imotormag.co.uk found that grey cars are the most likely to require roadside assistance, with 1.3 million vehicles needing help each year.
It was followed in second place by green cars, with them having a 37 per cent chance of breaking down.
