The energy secretary has met with representatives from large energy providers, it has been reported.

Ed Miliband delivered a message to executives from British Gas, E.On, EDF, Npower, Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy on Monday.

The meeting was planned ahead of the December 1st deadline, by which the firms must prove to industry watchdog Ofgem they are not over-charging pre-payment meter customers.

A Department for Energy and Climate Change spokesman told the BBC the meeting also "recognised the significant investment needs of the industry".

"The companies have each committed to responding positively to the Ofgem probe and have reaffirmed their desire to ensure that all price differentials are broadly reflective of underlying cost," he added.

The Conservative party outlined new energy proposals earlier this week, claiming a government under their control would make energy companies offer "social tariffs" to households classed as vulnerable.
