The Conservative proposals to offer cheaper social energy tariffs to vulnerable households have been welcomed by Age Concern.
Yesterday, shadow energy secretary Greg Clark said that a Tory government would "make it unfair" for energy companies charge "unfair price premiums" for households with pre-payment meters.
He added that such moves could save an average household around £250 per year.
A spokesperson for Age Concern has said the Conservative party is "taking the lead of fuel poverty".
"Strong and decisive action is needed to tackle the fuel poverty crisis, in order to help the poorest pensioners and families who are struggling to afford to heat their homes," it was added.
Energy secretary Ed Miliband has met with key energy providers including British Gas, E.On, EDF, and Npower ahead of the December 1st deadline by which companies need to show they are not over-charging pre-payment mater customers.
