The Scottish National Party (SNP) is calling on the UK government for "decisive action" to help households with their energy bills over the winter period.

Stewart Hosie MP, the SNP treasury spokesman has written a letter to Chancellor Alistair Darling urging him to act now in helping those who are facing soaring energy bills.

Mr Hosie said it was a "scandal" that many individuals, "especially older people" are currently living in fuel poverty and struggling to pay bills despite living in "an energy-rich country like Scotland".

He added there has been a "lack of action" from the government to help households which are suffering.

"In addition to a VAT holiday on all household energy bills, the UK government should also cut VAT on bills for all energy efficiency measures, while the Chancellor should also offer a one-off payment of £100 to pensioners to help them get through the winter," stated Mr Hosie.

The Conservative Party recently proposed offering cheaper social energy tariffs to households across the UK classed as vulnerable if they came into power.
