Consumer Focus has issued a challenge to the big UK energy firms, according to reports.

The consumer watchdog wants at least one of the big six firms to "break ranks" before Christmas, reports Marketing Week.

Minister for Energy and Climate Change Ed Miliband recently met with representatives from the energy firms in the hope of persuading them to pass on the savings experienced in wholesale oil and gas prices to consumers across the UK.

Ed Mayo, chief executive of Consumer Focus, told the site: "At a time when businesses are having to cut their margins to the bone and all consumers are being squeezed on every front, Consumer Focus is calling for at least one supplier to break ranks and reduce their prices by Christmas."

Ministers from the Scottish Parliament's economy, energy and tourism committee toured the Longannet Power Station earlier this week as part of their inquiry relating to the future of energy production and consumption in the country.

The site currently supplies around 25 per cent of Scotland's annual energy needs.
