The government needs to launch a number of financial aids which are specifically aimed at the older generation, according to a leading charity.
Age Concern has launched a number of key recommendations to propose to the government ahead of its forthcoming pre-budget report.
The organisation wants help to fight pensioner poverty, improve social care and a degree of "recession-proofing" for older workers, under which people over 50 are given intensive support to get back into employment.
It has also called for an increase in the winter fuel payment to help poor pensioners who are struggling to pay bills, alongside a new fuel poverty strategy and a commitment to deal with unfair pricing.
Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said the government must ensure it "does not ignore the needs of millions of older people who are quickly running out of ways to pay their bills".
British Gas recently unveiled a partnership with Help the Aged to help inform elderly people about fuel benefits available to them.
