Incentives for renewable energy in the UK do not go far enough, according to one industry group.

The Climate Group has said a number of concerns have been raised with regards to the level of overseas carbon credits which would be used to help to hit the UK's targets.

Under the Climate Change Bill, the UK needs to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 26 per cent by 2020 and 60 per cent by 2050, when compared to the levels from 1990.

Madeleine Cobb, EU policy manager for The Climate Group, said that changes to the Bill have been welcomed and to achieve its targets the government needs to consider the use of feed-in tariffs and upgrade the national grid.

She added: "The UK must increase its share of renewables in final energy demand from the current level of about two per cent to 15 per cent by 2020, which in turn will require an uplift in renewable electricity generation from the current level of about five per cent to about 35 per cent."

From 2008, the government also has to publish five-yearly carbon budgets under the Climate Change Bill.
