A new study has found that people living in Plymouth are paying the highest fuel bills in England, according to reports.

Research on the six major UK energy suppliers by industry watchdog Consumer Focus found that those residing in the south-west of England pay an average yearly gas and electricity bill of £1,292, reports the Plymouth Herald.

Peter Brookshaw, Plymouth city council cabinet member for housing, told the newspaper that fuel prices need to be "standardised across the country".

He added there is an "awful lot of Plymouth people" living in fuel poverty.

Mr Brookshaw stated: "We've been paying more for years because we are out on a limb on the national grid,”

"That's totally unfair in a region which is poorer than most. It's a double whammy."

David Hunter, from energy consultants McKinnon & Clarke, recently told the Daily Mail that with reductions in wholesale costs for energy firms, there is "clear room" for price drops for consumers.
