The business and enterprise committee has issued a new report stating that energy bills should be cut next month, it has been reported.

Pressure is mounting on the big six energy firms to reduce consumer's bills following reductions in wholesale prices, reports the Daily Mail.

The report from the committee of MPs said drops should be introduced to help cash-strapped families and pensioners to survive through the winter months.

It also highlighted that an estimated 5.5 million UK households are currently living in fuel poverty, where they spend over ten percent of income on power bills.

Conservative MP Peter Luff, chairman of the committee, told the newspaper: "We support the government in calling on the big six energy companies to cut prices for their retail customers as soon as possible in 2009."

Energy secretary Ed Miliband recently urged gas and electricity providers to drop their prices "as soon as possible".
