An MP has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling for the government to take action on any energy firms who do not pass cost reductions on to its consumers.

Backbench Labour MP Fabian Hamilton has tabled the motion, which is currently supported by a number of colleagues.

The EDM said that rises in energy prices could push over six million people into fuel poverty, with energy providers' profits rising to "over £5,000 million".

It adds the government's three-year measures are "welcomed" but "will not go far enough to end fuel poverty".

Gavin Hayes, general secretary of left-wing pressure group Compass, said the practise of "record price rises" alongside continued "record windfall profits" from energy firms "has to stop".

He added: "The energy companies who refuse to pass on cost cuts onto consumers demonstrate exactly why the government must now decisively intervene and levy a sensible one-off windfall tax."

A recent report by the business and enterprise committee stated that energy bills should be cut in the next month, the Daily Mail reported.
