npower has been given the Environmental Award at the Utility Industry Achievement Awards.

The company, one of the leading UK energy firms, won the award for its Climate Cops scheme, which aims to help schools across the county to become greener and more sustainable.

Under the scheme, npower arranges demonstrations in schools and teaches children about energy saving through a series of interactive events.

To date, some 150 schools have been visited by the Climate Cops.

Clare McDougall, education programme director at npower, said it has been a "superb year" for the Climate Cops scheme.

She added: "The team would like to say a huge thanks to all the npower people who volunteered and got involved in the programme, by nominating their favourite school, helping at a Climate Cops Academy or taking part in our Green SOS competition."

Recent research by npower claimed that businesses across the UK waste up to £7 million a day over the Christmas period through poor energy efficiency.
