British Gas has guaranteed it is going to lower its energy prices in the coming months, it has been reported.
According to the Times, the energy firm has pledged to launch a new tariff which would reduce prices by at least ten per cent below its current standard rates for the next 15 months.
British Gas's new WebSaver 1 tariff is estimated to cost round £1,057 for a medium-usage dual fuel consumer, which would be £240 less than the current average UK energy bill.
As part of the deal, a ten per cent guaranteed saving on the deal would mean that if British Gas's overall tariffs dropped in the spring, then the WebSaver 1 prices would follow suit.
Joe Malinowski, from Theenergyshop.com, told the newspaper: "The guarantee means customers don’t have to worry about what happens to their rates when the supplier pulls the deal for new customers — not until 2010 anyway."
Harriet Harman, the leader of the House of Commons, recently said the government would consider new legislation which would put energy firms under legal pressure to pass falls in wholesale prices to consumers quicker.
