A new health and safety advertising campaign has been launched about the dangers of gas.

The campaign, which is jointly funded by the National Grid, Northern Gas and Wales and West, aims to instruct people to ring a dedicated phone number if they smell gas.

On the advertisements, which were launched on Christmas Day, giant noses are seen sniffing the air.

The campaign is scheduled to run into the new year and will be seen by people living in the Central, Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees, Border, HTV and West Country TV regions.

Andy Walton, managing director of Golley Slater Advertising, said it was hoped the adverts would "stand-out" among the "sale season" nature of ads across the festive period.

He added: "The large sniffing noses underpin the need to call the Emergency Gas number if they smell gas".

Scottish and Southern Energy recently celebrated hitting the nine million customer mark, making it the second largest energy supplier in the UK.
