A number of members of Scottish Parliament (MSP) are calling on UK energy firms to drop heating bills over the winter, it has been reported.

The price of wholesale oil has dropped from $140 (£94) a barrel during the summer to almost $40 now, while energy prices experienced by consumers have "remained high", reports the Aberdeen Press & Journal.

Mike Weir, the energy spokesman for the Scottish National Party, told the newspaper that "thousands of Scots" were doomed to a "miserable winter with excessive bills for gas and electricity".

In addition, Sir Robert Smith, West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine Liberal democrat MP, said to the publication: "The energy companies should act now. The cold weather is with us now and people need more than the promise of future cuts when the winter is over."

In England, Fabian Hamilton, the Labour MP for Leeds North East who recently lodged an Early Day Motion calling for a reduction in energy prices, wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post that government has a "moral obligation" to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
