A hotel in Doncaster is set to attempt a revolutionary new way to help the country's energy crisis.
The Mount Pleasant Hotel has teamed up with three other local businesses to trial the new Grott Box, in partnership with the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) in Yorkshire and Humber, reports the Star.
Under the new scheme, the hotel will collect all the waste food in the box so it can be processed as a renewable energy source.
The Grott Box has been devised by local firm Angelheart and they will be transported to a special site to be used into a renewable energy source.
Andrew Gadd, regional coordinator for NISP Yorkshire and Humber, told the newspaper that "one small pork pie can power a 60 watt bulb for 22 seconds".
He added: "Buffet catering is invariably excessive because of the need to be seen as a good host.
"Christmas and New Year parties are an ideal time to try to measure exactly how much food waste a hotel produces and explore innovative ways of making use of that high-energy material."
Andrew Duff, chief executive officer of RWE npower, recently said that "early and significant" investment is needed in power generation across the UK.
