An energy smart meter has the potential to help reduce consumers' energy consumption, reports the Sunday Herald.
The meters allow consumers to monitor how much energy they are using and to what cost their consumption is amounting to.
Adrian Clamp, head of utilities, oil and gas, and chemicals at consultancy firm Accenture, told the newspaper that the smart meters are "increasingly important" as they have the "potential to change consumers' behaviour".
He added: "They are important because they change the way the consumer can access info to drive down spend.
"They get far more intelligence - something that clips on to the metering infrastructure - but typically also a display screen that shows how much they are using."
UKPower.co.uk recently launched its new free online smart meter to help consumers keep track of their energy costs.
The tool calculates expected usage costs when visitors to the website enter two meter readings for their gas or electricity.
