A leading member of the Scottish parliament has submitted a notion which calls for the immediate reduction of energy bills.

Kenneth Gibson, supported by Scottish National Party energy spokesman Mike Weir, claims that declines in wholesale energy prices have not been passed onto domestic consumers, businesses or local authorities, a practise he describes as "totally unacceptable".

Mr Gibson, who represents Cunninghame North, said power companies are quick to raise charges, so they should be "just as quick to cut those prices when wholesale costs fall".

He stated: "At a time of economic downturn when Labour's recession means everyone is feeling the pinch, no one should have to pay over the odds just to boost the profits of the power companies."

Mike Weir recently told the Aberdeen Press & Journal that thousands of people across Scotland are doomed to spend a "miserable winter" with excessive bills for their gas and electricity.
