The new company which will be formed from the integration between EDF Energy and British Energy will help secure affordable and clean gas and electricity supplies for the UK, according to one executive.
Vincent de Rivaz, chief executive officer of EDF Energy, claims the combination with British Energy will help the firm play a leading role in the "generation, distribution and supply of energy".
He added: "This will reduce our exposure to short-term movements of gas and coal prices and will put us in a strong position to grow our customer base."
EDF Energy, the largest generator of electricity in the UK, can also move forward its plans to build four new nuclear reactors in Britain, according to Mr de Rivaz.
During December, the firm cut its prices by up to £24 a year for its residential electricity-only customers in London, the south-east and the south-west.
