The Conservative party's plans for a national roll-out of smart meters have been welcomed by the Energy Retail Association (ERA).

David Cameron recently unveiled his party's aim to install smart meters in all homes across the UK in a new green paper outlining plans to turn the country into a "low-carbon economy".

Garry Felgate, chief executive of the ERA, said that smart meters are the "cornerstone for energy saving in the home", adding that the technologies allow consumers to "cut back and save money" on their gas and electricity bills by "minimising energy wastage".

He stated: "We expect that the government will make an announcement soon on the timetable and delivery programme for smart metering, to avoid any delay in the planning for the national roll-out of 45 million smart meters throughout Britain."

TV weather person Sian Lloyd recently joined forces with the ERA to encourage people suffering from high energy prices to contact the Home Heat Helpline.
