People are suffering physically and mentally from high gas and electricity prices, according to one UK council.
North Somerset council claims fuel poverty statistics from 2005 showed that people across the region were struggling to pay bills, reports the Weston Mercury.
It added that "massive increases" in gas and electricity prices over the preceding years will have escalated the problem for thousands of people, claiming the "situation will be much worse now".
A spokesman for North Somerset council told the newspaper: "Cold homes affect the physical and psychological health of a household and this can range from miserable living conditions to life-threatening illnesses."
Gwen King, chairman of the Queens Park Residents' Association, recently told the Blackpool Gazette that people on her estate were afraid of switching on their heating due to high energy prices.
She added that people just "sit there in the cold" as that cannot afford their energy bills.
