Businesses and public sector organisations could cut their electricity bills through the use of biomass heating, according to the Carbon Trust.
The organisation claims in its new report entitled Biomass Heating: A Practical Guide that a biomass system which was capable of generating 1,600 megawatt hours a year could cut the heating bill for an average sized school by £50,000 a year.
Mark Williamson, director of innovations at the Carbon Trust, said heating currently accounts for 49 per cent of the UK's carbon emissions and biofuel can offer "carbon reductions" of up to 90 per cent.
He added: "We've become so reliant on oil, gas and electricity that many businesses just aren't aware of the cost and carbon benefits of turning to biomass for their heating supply."
Carmel McQuaid, climate change manager of Marks & Spencer, speaking alongside Jon McGowan, head of consumer marketing at the Energy Saving Trust recently said that companies need to offer incentives for customers to "go greener".
