Age Concern: 'Energy firms need to follow British Gas and reduce prices'

The announcement by British Gas to reduce its standard gas prices has been described as a "step in the right direction" by leading charity Age Concern.
Earlier this week (January 22nd) the energy supplier said it would cut gas prices by ten per cent for all standard tariff customers from February 19th.
Gordon Lishman, the director general of Age Concern, claims that other energy firms need to follow suit and cut their gas and electricity tariffs, warning that otherwise pensioners will "continue to struggle to pay their energy bills".
He added that government and the energy companies need to ensure the poorest people in society "get a fair deal".
"It is essential that social tariffs are reformed and the pricing penalties leaving cash, cheque and pre-payment customers paying more for their energy are removed," stated Mr Lishman.
Ed Mayo, chief executive of Consumer Focus, said British Gas had "the courage to do the right thing" when discussing the price cuts.
He added his organisation will now "turn the heat up" on the other energy suppliers to follow suit.
