Energy saving homes in the UK are few and far between, according to new figures released by Legal Marketing Services (LMS).
LMS collated energy efficiency information form 85 local authorities' home information packs (Hips) and found that there were no homes in band A – the highest rating for energy efficiency – and just one per cent made it into band B.
Meanwhile, 44 per cent of homes were given an average energy efficiency rating of D.
The better a home's rating the less residents are likely to spend on gas and electricity bills, as heating and lighting costs will be substantially lower.
Commenting on the study, Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax Estate Agents, said: "The overwhelming majority of homes have an average energy efficiency rating, with hardly any in the top two most efficient bands."
However, he added that more sellers are likely to make their homes more efficient as they become more aware of the benefits.
It is illegal to market a property in the UK without a Hip.
