Age Concern has called on the government to reassess its £5 billion benefits package.

The charity claims that the money is falling to reach millions of older people struggling with their electric and gas bills.

"With such a large share of their income going on basics such as food and heating, it's not surprising that many pensioners are feeling hard hit at the moment," said Age Concern.

The organisation added that the government must focus its attention on the poorest pensioners during the recession and move toward paying benefits directly to those who need them the most.

Meanwhile, Brits spend £2.4 billion a year lighting their homes – which accounts for ten to 15 per cent of an average electricity bill.

Changing to energy saving light bulbs could cut electricity costs by as much as £3 per bulb per year – which would save an average home around £50 annually.
