Scientists have developed an energy saving lightbulb that can cut lighting bills by as much as 75 per cent.
The new bulbs, which are based on LED technology, cost £2 to manufacture and last for up to 60 years.
Researchers claim the new bulbs are 75 per cent more efficient than the best energy saving lights available today and could reduce the proportion of electricity used for lighting from 20 per cent to five per cent.
Professor Colin Humphrey said: "This could well be the holy grail in terms of providing our lighting needs for the future."
Initially the Gallium Nitride used in the LEDs was too expensive for widespread use but the scientists, lead by a team at Cambridge University, have discovered a cheaper technique for mass producing the lightbulbs.
Meanwhile, Sony has unveiled its Bravia Eco TV, which it claims consumes 40 per cent less energy than standard models.
