More action to reduce electricity and gas prices has been called for by one Scottish MP.

According to Angus MP Mike Weir, who is the Scottish National Party's spokesperson for energy, the ten per cent reduction in prices by Scottish Gas is welcome but more needs to be done.

He told the Arbroath Herald that all energy companies need to make a concerted effort to reduce the cost of electricity and gas for their customers.

Mr Weir told the news provider: "While the Scottish Gas reduction is a step in the right direction, it should be noted that it in no way makes up for the earlier massive increases in price."

He added that during the last year prices have increased by around 50 per cent – despite reductions in wholesale prices in recent months.

Scottish Gas is the trading name for British Gas north of the border.
Both firms are owned by energy giant Centrica.
