Billions of pounds could be saved on electricity and gas bills if people bought energy-saving products, according to one expert.

Adrian Arnold of the Energy Savings Trust (EST) states that if everyone in the UK looked for the most energy-efficient rated products, the nation's domestic energy bill would be greatly reduced and enough energy would be saved to power 780,000 homes a year.

For example, Mr Arnold says that if someone bought an A-rated refrigerator rather than a G-rated one they would save approximately £186 a year on their electricity bill, and benefit the environment.

The European Union is considering changing the green labelling scheme which helps people choose the most efficient appliances such as washing machines and fridges, however the EST suggests that altering the current labels could cause confusion.

Research conducted by the group shows that people pay more attention to certain labels, with 77 per cent of those questioned being aware of the Energy rating labels and 90 per cent of these finding them useful.
