Trials involving the use of vegetable oil as a source of energy are underway, it has been revealed.
Investigations into whether the substance, along with animal fat, can be turned into a green solution for heating homes are now taking place in Norfolk.
Dr Bruce Tofield, project manager and member of the University of East Anglia's Low Carbon Innovation Centre, commented on the importance of the 12-month trials."
He said: "This is a major initiative in developing lower-carbon heating options for millions of properties, especially in rural areas, which depend on oil-fired heating."
Dr Tofield added he hopes the scheme can demonstrate "with total confidence the utility of renewable heating".
The energy is a biodiesel which was manufactured from vegetable oil and tallow in Scotland.
In related news, earlier this week, Ofgem, the energy regulator, issued guidelines regarding increasing consumer confidence in the green credentials of industry members, after complaints on the topic had been lodged with the body.
