Every home in Britain will have a green energy makeover by 2030 under new government plans aimed at cutting carbon emissions and reducing energy bills.
Insulation and low carbon technologies will be retrofitted in a third of British homes by 2020 – with 400,000 homes benefiting by 2015.
The government will also offer financial incentives to people to install solar panels, biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps, which will be paid for by levies on energy companies.
Announced by energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband, the strategy is part of Whitehall's plan to slash carbon emissions in the UK by 80 per cent by 2050.
He said: "We need to move from incremental steps forward on household energy efficiency to a comprehensive national plan – the Great British refurb."
Miliband said wasted energy is costing the average UK family £300 a year.
According to the Daily Mail, millions face further hikes in energy bills to pay for the expansion of green energy.
