An energy customer on the Isle of Man was shocked when he received an electricity bill for £14,000, it has been reported.

The issue was raised in the Island's House of Keys by John Houghton who said other constituents had received excessive gas and electricity bills, according to the Courier.

He cited examples of consumers getting bills of between £900 and £21,000.

Mr Houghton said in some cases the monies could have been withdrawn from people's bank accounts – a direct abuse of the direct debit system, the paper states.

Manx Electricity Authority chairman Quintin Gill apologised for the mistake and said the bill was the result of an input error and the money was not taken from the customer's account.

In a letter to Mr Houghton, Gill said he would investigate the other incidents brought up by Mr Houghton.

Meanwhile, domestic gas and energy prices in Ireland are expected to fall in the coming months after a review of tariffs.
