Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is investing £3 billion in Scotland over the course of the next three years.

According to the firm, the move will create hundreds of jobs and is adhering to its investment strategy despite the ongoing economic downturn and recession.

SSE said a major portion of the £3 billion worth of funding will be piped into the development of renewable energy in the country.

The largest of such environmentally-friendly developments carried out by the firm will be the £600 million Clyde wind farm – which will be Western Europe's largest onshore wind farm.

It will also replace transmission infrastructure between Beauly and Denny at a cost of £300 million.

According to the company its "investment programme stands out because it is designed to deliver new assets of critical importance to Scotland, the UK and the EU".

Earlier this month, SSE said it was on target to make a modest increase in profits by the end of this financial year.
