UK businesses with inefficient commercial properties should be tackled by the government, it has been claimed.

According to new research carried out on behalf of the Kingspan Group, non-domestic buildings should be at the centre of Whitehall's efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

The new report claims that a modest increase in the £27 billion being spent each year on the refurbishment of non-domestic property could dramatically improve overall energy efficiency.

An increase in funding of £1.96 billion would ensure that all refurbished buildings achieve a C rating in the government's Energy Performance Certificate by 2022 – saving companies an estimated £450 million a year in energy bills.

The report claims the saving could come from simply installing tried and tested insulation.

Current estimates show that 94 per cent of commercial buildings fall below the EPC's C rating.

According to the government, buildings produce almost half of the country's carbon emissions.
