Four international energy firms have joined forces to win exclusive rights to develop windfarms at the Crown Estate.
Airtricity, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scottish and Southern Energy, RWE npower renewable, Statkrafy and StatoilHydro have all come together to combine their expertise and financial resources to submit a joint bid.
The consortium, known as Forewind, has extensive experience in offshore project delivery, operation and management as well as knowledge of UK utility expertise.
Project Manager Peter Raftery said: "Each of the four consortium members - all leading players in their own right - recognise that by joining forces we have an ability to make a significant contribution to the future of wind energy in the UK."
He added that the quartet is determined to demonstrate their commitment to the development of offshore wind capacity in the country.
The Crown Estate is expected to house offshore windfarms with a total capacity of 6GW.
